The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Applied Research, Community Health Epidemiology, and Surveillance (ARCHES) branch has announced the posting of the 2023 Hepatitis C Infection Surveillance Report and corresponding summary slides on SFDPH’s website.  View the report on SF.gov: https://bit.ly/3Ulv4fv

The ARCHES team provided a summary of key findings from the report: 

Key findings include:

• There were 655 newly reported chronic hepatitis C cases in San Francisco in 2023.
• Over two thirds of chronic hepatitis C cases reported in San Francisco were male.
• Black/African Americans in San Francisco are disproportionately affected by hepatitis C.
• The Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods bear the greatest burden of hepatitis C.
• Lab results between 2021-2023 indicate that 38% of people with a hepatitis C RNA positive test result were cleared or cured of HCV as of the end of 2023. These lab results additionally showed that:
• People who were between 25 years and 34 years old in this analysis had the lowest proportion (32.0%) of clearance or cure of HCV as of the end of 2023.
• Black/African Americans in this analysis had the highest proportion (48.5%) of people with HCV and among the lowest proportions (33.3%) of clearance or cure of HCV as of the end of 2023.
• Lab results between 2021-2023 indicate that almost two thirds of HIV/HCV coinfected cases with a positive HCV viral test were cleared or cured of their HCV infection as of the end of 2023.
